How To Install Deb Files

Caution:  .DEB files are available from many sources on the web, but not all are safe for installation on Xandros, in fact, many of them will trash your system irreparably, forcing you to reinstall Xandros from Scratch.  I would highly recomend that you install only .DEBs compiled for, and tested on your version of Xandros.  You have been warned!  The following listed download sites and repositories have been created by fellow Xandrosians, and feature packages known to be safe, and to work on the specific version of Xandros for which they were compiled.

http://www.archlug.org/apt/

This is the most well-known and fullly integrated Xandros Networks (apt) repository specifically for Xandros 3 and Xandros 4.

It includes mirrors of the collections below, avoiding the need to download individual package files -- just search and select them from the menus in Xandros Networks.

Now, on to the installation procedure:

  • Download your .DEB file to an easy to find location.  (I save all my downloaded DEBs to a folder named "Linux Packages", on a separate partition, so that in the event I need to reinstall Xandros, I won't have to download them again.)
  •
  • Start Xandros Networks (XN), by double-clicking the icon on your desktop which looks like a globe.  Wait a few minutes while Xandros Networks refreshes its package information
  •
  • Click the File menu, and select Enter Administrator Mode.  Enter your Administrator password and click OK.
  •
  • Click the File menu, and select Install DEB file.
  •
  • Wait while Xandros Networks installs the file.  When XN says Done, close the installation window, and you are finished.  Exit XN, and go enjoy your new software.

* Note:  Not all debs create their own menu entries and desktop icons, and in such cases, it will be necessary to create your own.  For tips on how to do this, see:  How to use Menu Editor (Add or Remove Applications)

Nice Instructions!

I added a page title, and made the initial paragraph smaller than the heading for readability. Also edited a typo with missing character.
