How To Copy Encrypted DVD's Using K9copy

If you want to make back-up copies of your encrypted commercial DVD movies, ala DVD Shrink on Windows, you will need to install k9copy, which is the Linux equivalent.

Part 1: Installing k9copy from The Geek Connection

To install k9copy, follow the instructions below:

• You will also need to have libdvdcss2_1.2.8.x.1-1_i386.deb, also available from The Geek Connection Xandros 4 Downloads page, and you may wish to install k3b, an excellent CD, DVD burning program, available from the same site.

• Download the k9copy DEB file from Geek Connection, ( http://www.geekconnection.org/ )

• Save your downloaded packages to an easy to find location on your hard drive.

• Open Xandros Networks (XN), by double-clicking the blue "Globe" icon on your desktop, or click Launch > Xandros Networks. Wait while XN updates its package information.
• Click the File Menu, and select Enter Administrator Mode. Enter your Administrator password when prompted, and click OK

• Click the File menu, and select Install DEB File. In the file requester, navigate to the folder where you saved your new DEB files, and select the first one for installation. Click Open.

• Wait while XN installs the file, and when it is done, close the installation window, Repeat the above procedure for each additional package.

Since the above listed DEB file for k9copy does not automatically create a menu entry and desktop icon, you will need to do so manually. To do so, follow the procedure outlined below:

Part 2: Creating a Menu entry and icon

• Right click on the Launch button, click Menu Editor. In the left pane, expand the Applications list, and single-click the Multimedia Heading, to select it.

• Click the New Item icon in the toolbar. (Hint:: It looks like a blank sheet of paper with a star on it.) In the New Item requester which opens, type k9copy , and click OK. In the right pane, in the description field, type DVD copier. You'll need to know where k9copy resides in order to add it. For this package, it's at "/usr/local/kde/bin/k9copy". Type or copy and paste that location into the Command field.

• Next, click the button at the upper right of the right pane, to set an icon. The button looks like a blank sheet of paper with the lower right corner dog-eared. With System Icons and Applications selected, scroll through the available icons until you find one that suits you. I chose the icon for copycd. Select the icon of choice, and click OK.

• Finally, save your changes by clicking the floppy disk icon in the toolbar, and once the save operation finishes, exit the Menu Editor. You're done. A menu entry for k9copy can now be found by clicking Launch > Appllications > Multimedia.

• If you want to add an icon to your desktop, simply right-click on k9copy in the Multimedia sub-menu, and select Add Item to Desktop. The icon you chose will automagically appear on your desktop. Simply double click it to start k9copy.

Part 3: Copying a DVD Movie:

Disclaimer: This program can be used to copy DVD movies. If you plan to
use this software for the coping of  commercial DVDs please be sure to apprise
yourself of the local copyright laws for your city, county, state,
province, country and municipality. The author of this guide assumes no
responsibility for any legal trouble due to the use of this
program/software. This article is being written after only using the
software several times. You may encounter various errors or problems
that I have yet to experience. Also not all copied DVDs work in all DVD
players. Please refer to the user manual for your dvd player for this
type of information. Not all blank DVDs are the same, some will work,
some won't. I have been using Memorex dvd-r(s) for my projects and have
not had any problems.
 
 
1.Pick out a DVD Movie to copy, and place it in your DVD drive.  Note:  Crossover Office may auto-start when you insert the disk,

 attempting to install Windows software which is included on many movie disks.  If this happens, click Cancel at the bottom of the

 Crossover Office window, to exit.
 
2.Click the blue file folder in the toolbar to open the movie or go to the File menu and select Open. Either way works.
3.After your Movie is opened place an X in the box next to Keep Original Menus. This option is half way down on the left side 

   of the screen.
 
4.Select the language options you wish to use from the pane in the bottom left of the screen.
 
5.Click the Settings tab above the right pane and X the box for Auto Burn.
 
6.Select the drive or location you wish the movie to be copied to by selecting the Output Device and specifing how you want to copy the 

   DVD, i.e DVDRW Drive, or ISO.
 
7.Last step, Copy your DVD. This is accomplished by clicking the blue gear icon in the toolbar, or by going to the  Actions menu and

  selecting Copy. The whole copying process can take over an hour so find something constructive to do while you wait. Also the copying

  process tends to use a lot of system resources I recommend against using processor intensive programs while k9 is running.
